Media X

Media X at Stanford University is a collaboration of Stanford and industry that brings together Stanford's leading interactive technology research with companies committed to technical advancement and innovation.

The Media X research network sponsors Stanford faculty and researchers studying basic issues about the design and use of interactive technologies. The multidisciplinary projects that result are influencing the next generation of commerce, learning and entertainment.

Media X research focuses on people and technology - how people use technology, how to better design technology to make it more usable (and more competitive in the marketplace), how technology affects people's lives, and the innovative use of advanced communication technologies in research, education, art, business, commerce, entertainment, communication, national security, and other walks of life.

Media X is affiliated with the H-STAR Institute (Human-Sciences and Technologies Advanced Research Institute) at Stanford University.

Stanford’s Leadership and Media X

Media X reports to the Stanford Dean of Research. It has the support of Stanford's President, Provost, and relevant Deans, who have each offered guidance and resources to insure its success. Charles Kruger, who was Dean of Research when Media X was launched, and Katharine Ku, head of the Office of Technology and Licensing, have also contributed ideas about governance and sharing intellectual property.

President John Hennessy said of Media X: "Stanford is well-positioned to take the lead in advancing the study of interactive media from a variety of perspectives. I am very enthusiastic about a collaborative project that draws from the many strengths of Stanford's faculty as well as the strengths of corporate partners."

Provost John Etchemendy said of Media X: "Media X will create a new center at Stanford, but we have been preparing the way for quite some time. We have top-ranked academic programs in each of the core disciplines studying people and interactive technology. This project provides a capstone to those programs by linking the academic excellence of related departments to a multidisciplinary enterprise that will help invent the future of our information environment."
