Developing Applications and Platforms for Open Virtual Worlds

This workshop will gather key insights from people behind the new open source Sirikata (www.sirikata.com) platform coming out of Stanford as well as thought leaders on the content side of this equation. Augmented Decision Environments

This workshop addresses the opportunities and challenges in improving complex decision performance with computing environments designed to enhance decision making. It examines human information processing limitations and cognitive bias, and the software and hardware tools that could be brought to bear systematically to overcome some of these limitations. Participants will match available decision technologies with their own complex problem requirements.

Audience: Technologists, industry executives, academics, government administrators, and others interested in continuously improving their own decision environments.

New Metrics for New Media:
Analytics for Social Media and Virtual Worlds

Social media and virtual worlds offer two important frontiers for measuring earned engagement. In both, audiences are actively engaged as participants. This workshop will cover foundational concepts in media measurement, describe new frontiers in measuring audience engagement in social media and virtual worlds, and provide hands-on experience in using new analytical tools.

This session will also provide a walk through the basic operation of NodeXL, including generation of social networks from social media data sources like personal e-mail (drawing data from the Windows Desktop Search engine) and the Twitter social network micro-blogging system. Arbitrary edge lists (anything that can be pasted into Excel) can be visualized and analyzed in NodeXL. Attendees are encouraged to bring an edge list of interest. Sample data sets will be provided.

Audience: Measurers, media planners, analysts, social scientists, and advertisers.

 

 

 
Remote Collaboration in Mixed Media Mixed Reality Environments

Media and Management Bridges Between Heart and Head for Impact   Organizer:

August 7 While evolutionary approaches to digital media production and distribution are becoming commercially viable, revolutionary approaches that have the power to create transformational opportunities in solving the education, health and environmental needs of 7 billion people are still to come. In this workshop we will explore how multimedia environments can radically reduce the distance between head and heart - for high impact communications.

Audience: Managers, executives, non-profit leaders and all people interested in collaborating about breakthrough innovation that applies to problems of global scope.

 

 

 

Week Four
Data Visualization: Theory and Practice   Organizers:

August 10-11 The goals of this workshop are to provide both a practical and theoretical introduction to visualization. This will include a primer in the underlying perceptual principles, and presentations describing the use of visualization in various domains, including visual analytics / business intelligence, geometric modeling, and online information visualization. We will incorporate one or two hands-on design exercises in a schedule of introduction to visualization and hands-on design work on the first day, and a survey of visualization applications on the second day.

 

 

 
Technology Transfer for Silicon Valley Outposts   Organizers:

August 12 In this fast-paced one-day seminar, a highly successful technology transfer expert, Jean Marc Frangos, of BT (British Telephone), will lead a discussion of Best Practices and Effective Results for superior Technology Transfer, covering such issues as "Not Invented Here", "Explain that again -- they do what?", and "Persuading your manager".  Chuck House of Stanford's Media X program will share success stories for Media X clients working with the Stanford faculty on innovative pilot projects.

Audience: Designers, innovators, managers working for "remote labs" - labs located away from corporate headquarters - who seek to improve their Technology Transfer rate, to gain more acceptance for their "strange ideas" that seem hard to explain to managers who lack the context in which the ideas are born and nurtured. 

 

 

 

Collaborative Visualization for Collective, Connective and Distributed Intelligence

Structured Data, Synthetic Minds ~ Visualizing the Dynamics of Knowledge - Media X Vanguard Visualization Collaboratory

August 12-13-14 This workshop will bring together visualization vanguards from the leading edge of science mapping, collaborative visual sensemaking, social network analysis and the emerging semantic web. Surrounded by the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science Exhibition at Wallenberg Hall and dynamic maps from Stanford’s Spatial History Project and the Human-Computer Interaction Lab, visual thinkers from four departments on campus, designers and special guests will share a series of case studies of their work to gain a synthetic perspective on the future of visualization for connective intelligence. New cyberinfrastructures of scholarly data, network analysis and visualization tools will be presented along with novel approaches to data sharing from the social semantic web.

Audience: The goal of this workshop is to catalyze multi-institutional research projects that activate the convergence of new visualization approaches and design tools for distributed knowledge sharing and collaboration.
